The 8th Battalion formed at Brecon as part of the Third New Army on the 19th of September 1914 and then moved to Seaford, before joining the 67th Brigade of the 22nd Division and moving to Hastings. In April 1915, the battalion moved to Seaford and Aldershot before being mobilised for war in September and being sent to France. Then in November the battalion embarked for Salonika from Marseilles, where the battalion engaged in various attacks against the Bulgarian army including the Battle of Horseshoe Hill and the Battle of Machukovo. In 1917, the battalion fought at the Battle of Doiran which went on from April till May. Hugh Thomas died a few months after the Battle of Doiran and he was killed in action.
