Thomas’ battalion was mobilised for war in December 1915, then landed at Havre before engaging in various actions on the Western Front including the Battle of Albert. However, the battalion suffered severe causalities and took a year to rebuild before being involved in the Battle of Pilkem and the Battle of Langemark.
