Peter William's family lived at 320 Watery Lane, Sutton, St. Helens, Merseyside. However, Peter was raised by his grandfather and lived his life in Bangor. Peter served as part of the 10th Battalion of the Royal Welsh Fusiliers, which moved to France in 1915 before participating in the recapture of the Bluff, the capture of St. Eloi Craters and Wulverghem (German gas attacks) and the Battle of Bazentin Ridge and the Battle of Delville Wood.
