William Hughes served as part of the 13th Battalion of the Welsh Fusiliers. The battalion moved to France in 1915 before fighting in the Battle of Albert and Mametz Wood in 1916 and the Battles of Ypres in 1917. In 1918, the battalion returned to France and fought in various Battles of the Somme including the battles of Ancre, Albert, Bapaume, Havrincourt, Epehy, Beaurevoir Line, Cambrai as well as the capture of Villers Outreaux and the battles of Selle and Sambre.
