Italy - 1916

In 1916 the Italians launched yet more offensives along the Isonzo River. Each time the Italian and Austro-Hungarian armies suffered heavy casualties for very little gain. In May Austria-Hungary launched an attack in the Trentino region but the snowy and mountainous landscape caused problems for both sides. Austria-Hungary was also under pressure from the Russian Brusilov Offensive and had to call off the Trentino attack in June.

Italian soldiers hoist a field gun up through the mountainous Trentino region. The Italian Front was probably the most extreme environment of the First World War.
