First Welsh VC of the War

Lance Corporal William Fuller was the first Welshman of the First World War to receive the Victoria Cross, the highest medal that can be awarded to British servicemen and womenfor bravery. L/C Fuller was sent to France in August 1914 with the 2nd Battalion, Welsh Regiment. During the Battle of Aisne on 14 September, he risked his life while trying to save Captain Mark Haggard, who was seriously wounded. L/C Fuller carried Capt. Haggard on his back for 100 yards through heavy gun fire to get him to safety and dress his wounds. With the help of some other soldiers, he managed to carry Capt. Haggard to a nearby dressing station (a place where soldiers could get emergency treatment). Unfortunately, Capt. Haggard died that evening
