Three German prisoners of war escape from an internment camp – a camp to hold captured soldiers – in Dyffryn Aled, Llansannan, Denbighshire. Hundreds of soldiers spend two days searching for the three officers, Lieutenant-Commander Hermann Tholens, Captain Heinrich von Henning and Captain Hans von Heldorf. The officers attempted to meet with a German submarine near Llandudno but they failed to make contact. They were eventually recaptured in Llandudno where a police officer recognised one of the officers. It became clear afterwards that the officers had been very unlucky; the submarine was not able to see the officers’ torch light signals because of some rocks that were in the way!
