Frederick Barter VC

Company Sergeant-Major Frederick Barter of the 1st Battalion, Royal Welsh Fusiliers, was awarded the Victoria Cross for bravery in the face of the enemy at the Battle of Festubert, France, during May 1915. He and eight volunteers attacked German positions with bombs and grenades to try and gain ground. As a result of the advance, they captured three German officers, 102 men and 500 yards of enemy territory. He also cut the wires of 11 German mines that could have caused severe damage.
