Pembrokeshire man awarded VC

no date

Hubert ‘Stokey’ Lewis of Milford Haven was awarded the Victoria Cross for an act of exceptional bravery on this day at Macukovo in Salonika, Greece. Private Lewis of the Welsh Regiment was only 20 years old when he took part in a raid on German and Bulgarian trenches. He was wounded several times but refused treatment so that he could continue to search enemy dugouts to see if anyone was hiding there. After the call for the British troops to return to their trenches was made, he went to help a seriously wounded soldier and carried him to safety, despite being attacked by heavy gun fire.
