Cardiganshire man awarded VC

Lewis Pugh Evans of Abermad, near Aberystwyth, was Temporary Lieutenant Colonel and Commanding Officer of 1st Battalion, The Lincolnshire Regiment when he won the Victoria Cross ‘for conspicuous bravery and leadership’ at Passchendaele, Belgium. Lt. Col. Evans led his battalion through enemy fire and he captured a machine gun by firing his gun through a hole. Although he was wounded, he led his men through more enemy fire to successfully complete their second objective. He refused to be bandaged up because so many other men needed help and made his own way to the first aid station.
