Flintshire man awarded VC

26/8/1918

Henry Weale, a Lance-Corporal in the 14th Battalion, The Royal Welsh Fusiliers, was awarded the Victoria Cross for capturing enemy machine guns in Bazentin-le-Grand in France. When Lance-Corporal Weale’s Lewis gun stopped working during an attack on enemy posts, he took it upon himself to attack the nearest post. He secured the post, before moving on to the next. The soldiers at this post fled when they saw him approaching. Lance-Corporal Weale was born in Shotton, Flintshire, and was only 20 years old on the day of this brave act.
